Eating healthy while you’re dirt-poor.
And I don’t mean “Honey I’m making a budget where we can only spend $100 a week for the 3 of us”… no, I mean the fact that I haven’t gone grocery shopping in 2 weeks and I have a family of 3 to feed and we are pretty much dirt poor right now. (In fact I am trying so hard to get a second full-time job, I don’t want to, but I know I have to.)
So, I just wanted to see if anyone else out there felt the same as me.
It is pretty freakin’ hard to find something healthy to eat in your pantry when it’s just got the bare essentials and some things that have just been picked over for other things. Like right now. I am so freakin hungry but I’m going to try to wait an hour so I can make “supper” for me and my 5 year old. Now, don’t get me wrong: Logan will NEVER be without, I will make sure of that. If I have to sell my soul for $5 for a freakin kids meal at a fast food place (blech, *shudder*) then I will do that before I let him go hungry. Looks like right now, though, he’ll probably be eating a PB&J sandwich on a hotdog bun since we’re out of bread, some chips and juice or whatever. But then, as I’m doing that - as I’m looking to see what he’ll have, I’m noticing my own options for myself are pretty darn slim. For healthy stuff, that is. Now, if I wanted to just throw caution to the wind and say that I had to eat something unhealthy just for the simple fact that there’s not much else to choose from, then I could. But I won’t. I have a guilty conscience. I could have some of those frozen waffles and maple syrup, or I could have one of those frozen beef and bean burritos that weigh in at around 350 cal each. So yeah, I’m just in a mood I guess.
Looks like it’s rice and vegetables again for me tonight. Not bad but definitely not as appetizing as those frozen waffles with maple syrup.

we are pretty broke right now as well. I just get lots of carrots, peppers, celery and other cheap veggies. Carrots sell for like a dollar for a good sized bag..
now cheese and meat is more but we have that too…
I am sorry you are going through this. I know how it feels.. Hopefully you will find a job soon
Girl, this economy SUCKS! Im right there with you! but honestly? I spent $80 ish for a whole month for myself. Ive made it almost 2 weeks. And all I need is more milk. I bought a ton of cheap cereal, cereal bars, and cheap apples and grapes. I also eat eggs EVERY DAY. I bought 2 18 count cartons. It was about 3 dollars. That will last me 18 meals [one egg and one egg white]. And to make more calories to feel fuller, a slice of cheese. I got a pack of 24 slices for 2 bucks. You have to buy store brand, so what. You can buy in bulk and set the rest aside, freeze it, bag it, whatever you need to do. I buy frozen fruits too so they last longer for me. What else… Do you have a dollar store??? Some dollar stores have food sections!!! A buck for a box of cereal? Go for it!!! And back in Massachusetts, we had this store called Price Right. It was SOOO cheap. I got a 10 pack bag of Dibs [obviously I was cheating then lol] for $2.00 even!!! Its over $5 at Walmart!!! Just shop for things on sale. Clip those coupons. You can save A LOT doing that. And dont buy it if you dont NEED it. Thats all I can really think to say. I wish you luck in your search for a second job. You will make this work. Dont worry! Things always work out! =]
I LOVE YOUR ONLINE NAME: Lisadoodlebug
Too cute girly girl!
If I haven’t said it yet, I will here: Welcome to buddyslim!
Girl, we sooooooooo broke my honey eats peanut butter and bread all day. I buy him muffins, crossiants and cups of noodle from costco.
We don’t eat together because he doesn’t like to eat healthy food.
What I do is I shop at multiple stores. Lucky for me I’ve learn from being here that fruits and veggies are a lot cheaper then elsewhere. I buy in bulk for chicken and what not.
And because I’m the only one working it’s hard.
I love that you are conscious with your food choices. Yep, even as broke as we are, I still manage to eat a lot of fruit and veggies.
Truth be told, it’s cheaper to buy produce then it is processed or fast food.
Rice and veggies IS A GOOD choice!
We’ve been shopping at the 99c only stores and they actually have produce. It’s not the greatest produce but I buy what looks decent and some of it is pretty good. I buy spinach in a bag, and light yoplait yogurt and several things they have. We have a family of 5 and I have been trying to do a budget of $200 for the month. Hahahaha, it never works! We’ve depleted our savings just supplementing the grocery bill. God knows I coupon shop and buy reduced meat, mark downs etc. We just can’t make it very well these days!
